Workshop at DHCS 2017

Reading Chicago Reading (RCR) co-PIs Robin Burke, Ana Lucic, John Shanahan, and Megan Bernal will be conducting a workshop at the twelfth annual meeting of the Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Science (DHCS). The meeting takes place November 17-19, 2017, at the Illinois Tech downtown campus and brings together researchers and scholars in the humanities and computer science to examine the current state of digital humanities and to explore and identify new pathways of inquiry and perspectives for future research.

The workshop, Mining Diverse Texts for Location and Sentiment, will be offered on Friday, November 17, 2017, 1-4 PM, on the Illinois Tech Mies Campus, Siegel Hall, Room 218, at 3301 S. Dearborn Street. The RCR research team will give advice and hands-on strategies for applying natural language tools to full-text data using the HathiTrust Data Capsule, the Stanford Natural Language Toolkit, GoogleMaps APIs, and other resources.

No prior experience with the analysis of spatial data is assumed, but some experience with programming is desirable. You will need to bring your own laptop to fully participate in the workshop. Instructions for configuring your machine are here: Anaconda_installation_instructions.
